Taiwan to boost east coast defenses

The military is to station mobile missile defense systems along Taiwan’s east coast after Chinese military vessels were spotted in the area, a source said yesterday.

On Friday, six Chinese warships, including the aircraft carrier Liaoning, entered the Pacific Ocean via the Miyako Strait, posing a threat to Taiwan’s east coast.

The Japanese Ministry of Defense on Friday confirmed the passage of the ships, saying that its Maritime Self-Defense Force monitored the vessels, adding that they did not enter Japan’s territorial waters.

Legislative by-election candidate Enoch Wu (吳怡農) yesterday rebutted accusation leveled against him by his competitor of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), saying that Taipei City Councilor Wang Hung-wei (王鴻薇) is “only talking negatively” about him, but does not have any policy proposals.

Wu, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate in a by-election in Taipei to fill the legislative seat vacated by KMT Taipei mayor-elect Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安), during the day held several campaign events and at night canvassed at Liaoning Street Night Market in the city’s Zhongshan District (中山).

Taiwan New Residents Development Association chairwoman Xu Chunying (徐春鶯), rumored to be on the Taiwan People’s Party’s (TPP) planned list of legislators-at-large, was seen in a video clip wearing a red scarf similar to those worn by China’s Red Guards, singing the praise of former Chinese leader Mao Zedong (毛澤東).

In the clip posted on Friday by a Facebook page called “One more step,” Xu was filmed with a group of Chinese who have married Taiwanese spouses, singing: I Love Beijing Tiananmen (我愛北京天安門), with red scarves around their necks, resembling those China’s Red Guards wore in the 1960s.

According to Wikipedia, I Love Beijing Tiananmen is a children’s song written during China’s Cultural Revolution.
