Taiwan to help Ukraine recover: Tsai

Taiwan is to join other democracies in helping Ukraine recover from the Russian invasion, and share its experience with countering authoritarian threats with the world, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) late on Wednesday told the “Struggle for Freedom” forum in Dallas, Texas, hosted by the George W. Bush Presidential Center.

“For Taiwan, democracy is more than a fundamental value that unites our people; it is also a critical asset in addressing major challenges. Taiwan is now in the position to share its experience with the world and create alliances, allowing democracies to more effectively deal with crises and counter the threats of authoritarianism,” Tsai said via videoconference.

US panel urges China sanctions plan

The US should create an interagency committee under the president to develop options and plans for sanctioning China in the event that Beijing takes hostile action against Taiwan, a US congressional advisory panel said on Tuesday.

The conclusion was one of 10 recommendations made by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission in an annual report to the US Congress.

China poses an increasingly aggressive threat to the US and deterring Beijing is the Pentagon’s top regional priority amid its rapid military buildup and invasion drills near Taiwan, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said on Tuesday.

“Our pacing threat is communist China,” Hegseth told the US House of Representatives Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense during an oversight hearing with US General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“Beijing is preparing for war in the Indo-Pacific as part of its broader strategy to dominate that region and then the world,” Hegseth said, adding that if it succeeds, it could derail reindustrialization in the US and strangle its economy.
