TPP drops controversial slogan

The Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) yesterday decided to remove a controversial slogan — “Vote White, Vote Right” — from its Web site after the wording was criticized as being similar to that used by US white supremacist groups.

TPP spokeswoman Lin Tzu-yu (林子宇) told a news conference that the slogan had referred to the color white that the TPP brands itself with.

“It was supposed to mean that a vote for the ‘power of white’ is the right choice,” she said.

US lawmakers urge Harris to meet with Lai

Six US lawmakers have sent a joint letter to US Vice President Kamala Harris, urging her to meet with Vice President William Lai (賴清德) during his stopovers in the US on the way to and from Paraguay next month.

Lai is to lead a delegation to attend the inauguration of Paraguayan president-elect Santiago Pena on Aug. 15.

While US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Lai is expected to “transit the United States on both the incoming and outgoing legs” of the trip, neither government has disclosed Lai’s itinerary in the US.

More than 300 protesters gathered in front of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) yesterday to urge the US to recognize Taiwan as an incorporated territory and assume full authority for its “military occupation.”

Waving a self-designed US Military Government flag — the shape of Taiwan superimposed on a US flag — the protesters, led by attorney Roger Lin (林志昇), chanted anti-government slogans and called for the expulsion of the Republic of China (ROC) “government-in-exile.”
