China preparing for Taiwan conflict: report

China’s massive military modernization program is dominated by preparations for a conflict with Taiwan and the possibility of US intervention, a Pentagon report said on Friday.

The report, which was issued in Washington, said that Beijing is ready to conduct missile attacks and precision strikes against the nation’s air defense systems, air bases, radar sites, missile silos, space assets and communications facilities.

Top Sunflower joins NPP, eyes legislative run

Academia Sinica researcher and Sunflower movement leader Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) yesterday announced his decision to become a member of the New Power Party (NPP), urging more young people to join the political party launched in January by prominent social activists.

Huang, who played a central role in the Sunflower movement protests last year, told a news conference in Taipei that he remained undecided over whether to enter next year’s legislative contest.

The People’s Sovereignty Movement — a 49-day protest walk to promote changes to the Referendum Act (公民投票法) and push for referendums on all cross-strait agreements — departed yesterday from Longshan Temple (龍山寺) in Taipei.

People from all walks of life — teachers, college students, shop owners, workers, social activists, Christian ministers and Buddhist monks — gathered at the square in front of the temple to sign up for the protest. Politicians such as former vice president Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) also took part.
