Study tests ‘fall of Taiwan’ threat to US

A US think tank has published a report based on the possibility that China might attempt a military takeover of Taiwan in less than 10 years time. Such a takeover is one of the “principal strategic challenges” the US could confront in the coming decades, the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments (CSBA) said.

The paper is aimed at pushing the Pentagon and Congress into discussion and debate on possible longer-term military crises as they decide what weapons systems to buy.

Taichung woman dies of swine flu after stillbirth

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) yesterday said that a 32-year-old pregnant woman in Taichung died of A(H1N1) influenza on Saturday.

“To date, 10 pregnant women have died of swine flu, none of whom had received the vaccine,” CDC Spokesman Shih Wen-yi (施文儀) told a press conference yesterday afternoon.

Relocating the development project for Kuokuang Petrochemical Technology Co’s proposed eighth naphtha cracker overseas could be an option amid opposition to constructing the plant in Taiwan, Minister of Economic Affairs Shih Yen-shiang (施顏祥) said yesterday.

On a visit to Academia Sinica, Shih said that from an economic point of view, major development projects such as naphtha crackers should be built in Taiwan, but added that the government would not oppose relocating such projects overseas if the environmental cost was “too heavy to bear.”
