Activist criticizes police for fining him for 'walking'

Taiwan Referendum Alliance convener Tsay Ting-kuei (蔡丁貴) yesterday criticized the police for fining him for violating the Assembly and Parade Act (集會遊行法) when he walked around outside the Presidential Office with a donation box and some supporters on Wednesday.

Tsay went to Zhongzheng First Precinct police station on Wednesday to pay the fines he had previously received for violating the Act. Tsay had received tickets totaling more than NT$800,000 because he has been conducting a sit-in demonstration against the Assembly and Parade Act outside the Legislative Yuan since October 2008.

Chen's son denies interest in poll race

Chen Chih-chung (陳致中), the son of former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁), yesterday denied expressing any intention to run for public office, saying the media had misinterpreted a comment he had made a day earlier.

His comment, however, drew mixed reactions from his party, with some Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members saying that having him run for Kaohsiung City councilor would not be a burden on the party, while others saying it could affect public perception of the party.

US President Barack Obama urged Myanmar yesterday to hasten its “remarkable” reforms on a historic visit during which he was feted by huge crowds and met democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi at the home where she was long locked up.

The trip, the first to Myanmar by a serving US president, came as the country’s regime freed dozens more political prisoners to burnish its reform credentials and after the US joined other Western powers in relaxing its sanctions.
