Changhua farmers protest CTSP irrigation water plans

Standing in front of a giant banner hanging from a water gate and emblazoned with the words “protect the water,” hundreds of farmers and farmers’ rights activists yesterday protested at the source of an irrigation channel in Changhua County’s Sijhou Township (溪州) over the Central Taiwan Science Park’s (CTSP) plans to divert water from the irrigation system.

“Water is already scarce and [the Changhua County Irrigation Association] only supplies water through irrigation channels four out of every 10 days,” Hsieh Pao-yuan (謝寶元), a farmer and president of the Alliance Against Water-Jacking by the CTSP, told the crowd. “With the CTSP planning to take more water from the irrigation channel, we Chang-hua farmers are going to be left with nothing — that is why we have to stand united and protect the water.”

Sign an investment treaty with the US, economist says

Economist Derek Scissors is urging Taiwan to diversify its international investment portfolio and seek a bilateral investment treaty with the US.

Scissors, a research fellow with the Asian Studies Center at the Washington-based Heritage Foundation, says that the US and Taiwan have an extraordinarily intense trading relationship.

With a population of 23 million, Taiwan is the US’ ninth-largest trading partner. However, excluding the microstates, it is actually the US’ third-largest trading nation on a “per person” basis.

DHARAMSHALA, November 26: In more alarming reports coming out of Tibet, a Tibetan man - the third in a single day - set himself on fire in Luchu region of Kanlho, eastern Tibet protesting China’s rule over of Tibet.

A group of exile Tibetans from Luchu identified the Tibetan self-immolator as Gonpo Tsering, 24 years of age and father of three children, all below the age of six.
