China simulates ‘sealing off’ Taiwan

China yesterday simulated “sealing off” Taiwan during a third day of war games around the nation, while the US deployed a naval destroyer into the South China Sea in a show of force.

China launched the exercises on Saturday in response to President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) meeting with US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy last week, an encounter it had said would provoke a furious response.

Tsai, McCarthy reaffirm partnership

President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy reaffirmed the strong partnership between Taiwan and the US, and their commitment to safeguarding regional stability, following their meeting in California on Wednesday.

“I believe our bond is stronger now than at any time or point in my lifetime,” McCarthy told a joint news conference with Tsai following a two-hour closed-door meeting at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley.

Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) received a death threat in a telephone call on Friday last week, Taipei City government spokesman Sidney Lin (林鶴明) said yesterday.

Media reports emerged on Wednesday night quoting Ko’s chief of staff Tsai Pi-ju (蔡壁如) as saying that a caller had criticized remarks made by Ko and warned him to “be careful,” because otherwise he would be “executed.”
