School apologizes for Chinese flag on senior yearbooks

A Keelung high school on Saturday night apologized for using a picture containing a Chinese flag on the cover of the senior yearbook, adding that it has recalled the books and pledged to provide students new ones before graduation on Thursday.

Of 309 Affiliated Keelung Maritime Senior High School of National Taiwan Ocean University graduates, 248 had purchased the yearbook.

Some students said that the printer committed an outrageous error in including the picture, while others said that nobody would notice such a small flag on the cover.

Ministry must act to end bomb threats: lawmaker

The Ministry of Justice must propose a solution to a slew of bomb threats over the past week, which were an intentional act of harassment to sow discord in Taiwanese society, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Liu Chien-kuo (劉建國) said yesterday.

Fushan Botanical Garden in Yilan County earlier yesterday received an e-mail stating that six explosive devices had been set in the garden, prompting it to shut for two days while a thorough search was conducted, Liu said in comments during a review of an amendment at the Legislative Yuan in Taipei.

On being informed that a South Korean naval patrol vessel sank in disputed maritime waters off the divided peninsula, President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九), on a state visit to Palau, called an emergency meeting of security officials on Friday night and ordered the activation of Taiwan’s national security mechanism, Presidential Office spokesman Lo Chih-chiang (羅智強) said.

Ma also held a conference call yesterday morning with officials in Taipei, including Vice President Vincent Siew (蕭萬長), Minister of National Defense Kao Hua-chu (高華柱), Premier Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) and Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平), to gather further information, Lo said.
