Chen's son denies interest in poll race

Chen Chih-chung (陳致中), the son of former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁), yesterday denied expressing any intention to run for public office, saying the media had misinterpreted a comment he had made a day earlier.

His comment, however, drew mixed reactions from his party, with some Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members saying that having him run for Kaohsiung City councilor would not be a burden on the party, while others saying it could affect public perception of the party.

Political leaders, central bankers and financiers at the World Economic Forum have attacked China’s monetary and trade policy and questioned its ability to tackle an overheating economy.

Top Chinese officials face an increasingly difficult task saying that Beijing is acting in the interest of the world economy by keeping its yuan currency weak against the dollar and maintaining a huge trade surplus — US$196.1 billion last year.

Ukrainian lawmaker Kira Rudik on Monday thanked Taiwan for its support of Ukraine and said she hoped to learn from Taiwan’s advanced security systems to combat Russian cyberattacks.

“Right now, Ukraine is at the forefront of that [fight for survival and democracy] and we need everybody as our allies,” Rudik, leader of the Holos party, said in an online interview. “And this is why it is so important to acknowledge the support that Taiwan was giving to Ukraine, and the support is increasing and I want to extend my gratefulness for that.”
