PRC using Iran to push US: Paal

Douglas Paal, former director of the American Institute in Taiwan, said that Beijing has linked its behavior in respect to Iran and North Korea to the US’ behavior toward Taiwan.

“China would like to put pressure on the United States to reduce arms sales and adjust its relationship with Taiwan in exchange for cooperation,” he said.

Taiwan High Court extends detention period for Chen

The Taiwan High Court yesterday extended former president Chen Shui-bian’s (陳水扁) detention by another two months from Feb. 24.

High Court judges wrote in their ruling that Chen needed to be detained to ensure a smooth litigation process because he stands accused of serious crimes and there are still dozens of witnesses and defendants who have yet to testify in court.

Presidential Office spokesman Alex Huang yesterday in Taipei announces the Presidential Office’s decision not to approve former president Ma Ying-jeou’s application to visit Hong Kong on Wednesday.

The Presidential Office yesterday turned down former president Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) application to travel to Hong Kong on Wednesday, citing national security concerns and the highly-sensitive nature of the planned destination.

Speaking at a news conference yesterday afternoon, Presidential Office spokesman Alex Huang (黃重諺) said that the office rejected Ma’s application after factoring in the counsel of an ad hoc group established to review the former president’s travel request.
