1992 consensus ‘biggest lie’: Chen

The so-called “1992 consensus” between Taiwan and China never existed and is nothing but a lie, former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) said yesterday.

In an excerpt of an interview published by the Chinese-language Formosa Weekly, which was founded by former vice president Annette Lu (呂秀蓮), Chen described the “one China, different interpretations consensus” President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) has been insisting on as “the biggest lie in history.”

The US risked inflaming a row on multiple fronts with China on Thursday, saying the Dalai Lama would visit the White House this month despite Beijing’s fierce protests.

But as tensions built over US President Barack Obama’s planned welcome for Tibet’s spiritual leader, officials sought to douse a running row with Beijing, saying the two sides had common interests despite mounting disagreements.

Standing in front of a giant banner hanging from a water gate and emblazoned with the words “protect the water,” hundreds of farmers and farmers’ rights activists yesterday protested at the source of an irrigation channel in Changhua County’s Sijhou Township (溪州) over the Central Taiwan Science Park’s (CTSP) plans to divert water from the irrigation system.

“Water is already scarce and [the Changhua County Irrigation Association] only supplies water through irrigation channels four out of every 10 days,” Hsieh Pao-yuan (謝寶元), a farmer and president of the Alliance Against Water-Jacking by the CTSP, told the crowd. “With the CTSP planning to take more water from the irrigation channel, we Chang-hua farmers are going to be left with nothing — that is why we have to stand united and protect the water.”
