Chen calls for release of his father

Former President Chen Shui-bian should be released from custody since his family had agreed to return funds from overseas accounts to Taiwan, his son Chen Chih-chung said yesterday.

The former head of state has been detained since Dec. 30, 2008 as a suspect in cases of corruption and money laundering. Expectations that he would be released rose after his relatives agreed last week that Switzerland could wire about NT$700 million into accounts designated by Taiwan prosecutors.

Organizations demand that Chen be released soon

A number of pro-independence organizations yesterday called on the government to release former President Chen Shui-bian from Taipei Detention Center, where he has been held in detention for 499 days.

At a press conference in Taipei yesterday, political commentator Chin Heng-wei criticized the government for Chen's protracted detention, saying that it was based on political considerations because Chen no longer posed a flight risk.
