Activists promise to follow negotiator

A group of Taiwanese independence advocates yesterday vowed to follow China’s top negotiator “every step of the way” when he visits Taiwan next week to show their anger in a series of protests.

China’s Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait Chen Yunlin Chairman (陳雲林) is scheduled to arrive in Taipei on Monday for the sixth round of talks since 2008.

US concerned over ECFA notification

The US government has expressed serious concern over the fact that the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) documents signed by Taiwan and China in June have yet to be submitted to the WTO as promised, Taiwan’s envoy to Washington said yesterday.

“Sending a notification about the ECFA to the WTO is the right thing to do,” Taiwan’s Representative to the US Jason Yuan (袁健生) told Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Huang Wei-cher (黃偉哲) at the legislature’s Foreign and National Defense Committee.

Academics yesterday lashed out at the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) government for what they called “a lack of concrete direction” in its policy on cross-strait relations.

At a conference held jointly by the Taiwan Competitiveness Forum think tank and the Chinese Integration Association, a pro-unificaton civic group, association chairman Chang Ya-chung (張亞中) said the government had failed to make clear where the nation is headed under its leadership.
