US identifies four invasion possibilities

The US Department of Defense has identified four possible military courses of action that China could take against Taiwan, but did not offer any guess on when Beijing might be ready to act.

In an annual report to the US Congress released on Tuesday titled Military and Security Developments Involving the People’s Republic of China 2022, the department gave a broad overview of China’s military capabilities, strategy, ambitions and intentions.

The report devoted significant space to developments related to Taiwan, against which it said China had intensified diplomatic, economic, political and military pressure last year.

Small political parties gain ground with city and county councilor wins

Small parties on Saturday made political inroads by winning local seats in the nine-in-one elections.

In its first time competing for local government offices since its formation in August 2019, the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) won 14 city and county councilor seats, performing the best among the smaller political parties.

The TPP, chaired by Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲), secured four seats in the capital, Taipei, and a total of 10 in New Taipei City, Hsinchu City, Taichung, and Changhua, Hsinchu, Hualien, Nantou and Yunlin counties.

The inclusion of the translation industry in the controversial cross-strait service trade agreement could allow China to dominate Taiwan’s linguistic development and pave the way for its cultural assimilation, Taiwan Democracy Watch secretary-general Chen Kuan-yu (陳冠宇) said yesterday.

Chen issued the warning following the conclusion of the Ninth Cross-Strait Economic, Trade and Culture Forum on Oct. 27, during which representatives from the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) and the Chinese Communist Party called for the pact’s speedy passage and implementation.
