Ministry approves Kuan’s appointment

The Ministry of Education yesterday said it would appoint National Taiwan University (NTU) professor Kuan Chung-ming (管中閔) as the university’s president according to its election result, but asked the school to review within three months a procedural flaw and other issues that arose during the election process.

Premier William Lai (賴清德) yesterday inspected the disposal of leftover pig food at a hog farm in Taichung and called on farmers and all Taiwanese to join hands to guard against African swine fever.

US president-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of state reaffirmed the US’ commitment to Taiwan based on the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA) and the “six assurances” during a US Senate confirmation hearing on Wednesday.

“We’ve made an important commitment to Taiwan,” through the TRA and the “six assurances,” and such commitments should be reaffirmed, former Exxon Mobil chief executive Rex Tillerson said in response to questions from US Senator Cory Gardner regarding the incoming administration’s position on Taiwan and the “one China” policy.
