Defense, beef ban unrelated: US official

The increasingly fractious beef row between Washington and Taipei will not impact arms sales or other aspects of the bilateral relationship, Assistant US Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific Kurt Campbell said on Thursday.

Asked if Taiwan’s decision to ban some kinds of US beef would go beyond trade and economic relations and be linked to such vital issues as security and arms sales, Campbell said that it would not.

Proposed beef referendum clears committee review

A civic movement to hold a referendum on US beef imports cleared another hurdle yesterday, passing a review by the Cabinet’s Referendum Screening Committee by a vote of 16-0.

After a meeting that lasted a little over an hour, committee chairman Chao Yung-mau (趙永茂) announced that the petition launched by the Consumers’ Foundation met the criteria in the Referendum Act (公民投票法), and “we have therefore decided to approve [it].”

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairperson Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) ended months-long speculation yesterday, announcing DPP Secretary-General Su Jia-chyuan (蘇嘉全) as her running mate for next year’s presidential election.

Su said he is ready to tackle the challenge with his political experience and the “excellent chemistry” he has with Tsai, as the pair had led the DPP’s recovery from a landslide loss in the 2008 presidential election.

The Tsai-Su ticket will challenge President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九), who is running for re-election, in what public opinion polls show could be a neck-and-neck race. Ma of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) announced on June 19 that he would pair up with Premier Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) for the January poll.
