US official hints at PRC concerns over arms sale

In his first public comments since returning from important two-day talks in Beijing earlier this month, US Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg did not sound overly optimistic about the future of the US-China relationship.

Asked if arms sales to Taiwan and the recent visit to the White House by the Dalai Lama could result in relations deteriorating before they get better, Steinberg sought to avoid the question.

Wen's favorable treatment is a sham: DPP

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's promise to give favorable treatment to Taiwan in negotiations over an Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) is a lie, the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said yesterday.

At a news conference in Beijing Sunday, Wen described Taiwan and China as "siblings" and said farmers and small businesses in Taiwan should not be harmed by ECFA.

The US yesterday called on China to halt its “provocative” pressure on Taiwan after a record number of daily incursions by Chinese warplanes, saying the military actions are destabilizing and risk leading to “miscalculations.”
