TSU vows to go on after poll is rejected

The Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) yesterday vowed to continue to push for a referendum on the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) after the Referendum Review Committee — for the second time — killed its proposal to let the public have a say on the recently signed cross-strait pact.

The committee yesterday rejected the TSU’s proposal in a 10 to two vote, saying the party failed to present a convincing argument.

ANALYSIS : Yang’s resignation leaves the DPP shaken

The defection of Kaohsiung County Commissioner Yang Chiu-hsing (楊秋興) from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has shaken the opposition party, angered party leaders and accelerated calls for the DPP to do some soul-searching.

It has also caused many to wonder what exactly caused Yang, considered a rising political star, to break from the party he joined more than three decades ago.
