US ready to ‘reach out’ to N Korea: Kerry

US Secretary of State John Kerry yesterday stressed the US is willing to engage with North Korea as long as it takes steps to give up nuclear weapons.

He also vowed the US would protect its Asian allies against any provocative acts by the North, but said Washington wants a peaceful solution to tensions in the region.

US representatives urge resumption of diplomatic ties

Two members of the US Congress have called on US President Barack Obama’s administration to resume diplomatic relations with Taiwan and to end its “one China” policy.

The largely symbolic move was made to mark the 34th anniversary of the enactment of the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA) on April 10, 1979.

During a visit by President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) yesterday to Chiayi County, a group of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) politicians and their supporters protested the transfer of former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) to Taichung Prison’s Pei-te Hospital, accusing the Ma administration of treating the former president inhumanely.

Ma, who doubles as Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) chairman, presided over a KMT meeting in Chiayi yesterday afternoon. Outside the KMT’s Chiayi County branch, about 100 protesters led by DPP Chiayi County branch director Huang Li-chen (黃麗貞) clashed with police while protesting against the government’s failure to grant Chen medical parole.
