Ma and premier stump for KMT in Nantou County

President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) visited Nantou County in his capacity as Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) chairman yesterday to campaign for the party’s candidate for county commissioner Lee Chao-ching (李朝卿).

Ma’s trip was a strong show of support for Lee, who was embroiled in a scandal this week, along with Premier Wu Den-yih (吳敦義), over their alleged connections with a local gang leader.

No change to arms policy: US officials

Two senior members of US President Barack Obama’s administration spelled out aspects of White House policy toward Taiwan on Friday and made it very clear that despite Chinese objections arms sales would continue.

Jeffrey Bader, senior director for East Asian Affairs in the National Security Council, and US Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg were speaking at separate briefings on Obama’s eight-day Asian trip, which starts this week and includes talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao (胡錦濤).

China has reacted angrily to the US government’s diplomatic boycott of next year’s Winter Olympics, as more nations said they would consider joining the protest over Beijing’s human rights record and New Zealand announced that it would not send representatives to the Games.

Chinese officials dismissed Washington’s boycott as “posturing and political manipulation,” and tried to discredit the decision by claiming that US diplomats had not even been invited to Beijing.
