US beef arriving in a week's time: official

The first batch of US beef exports under a relaxed ban is likely to arrive in Taiwan within a week after the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued Quality System Assessment (QSA) certificates to qualified suppliers, a Ministry of Economic Affairs official said yesterday.

While the new QSA regulations stipulate that both boneless and bone-in beef from cattle less than 30 months of age slaughtered on or after Nov. 2 can be exported to Taiwan, only boneless beef from cattle slaughtered before that date can be exported to Taiwan.

Financial MOU to be inked soon: Wu

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) on financial supervisory cooperation between Taiwan and China could be signed next week at the earliest, Premier Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) said in an interview with the Central News Agency (CNA) yesterday.

Signing the MOU is a “necessity” for Taiwan and China because it would be beneficial to cross-strait cooperation in the financial sector, Wu said, adding that there was “no doubt about that.”

Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) Chairman Chiang Pin-kung (江丙坤) yesterday urged the public to look at the upcoming cross-strait talks with an open mind, adding that he would conduct all negotiations under the principle that Taiwan is the focus and that the interests of the public come first.

Chiang said he hoped the Chinese people and the international community would see Taiwan’s democracy and rationality during exchanges between the SEF and its Chinese counterpart, the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS).
