Chen, attorneys dispute the validity of key evidence

In a pre-trial hearing at the Taiwan High Court yesterday, former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and his attorneys said certain key evidence and witness statements should not be admissible in court.

Chen and his attorneys appeared at the appeals court where judges are reviewing the guilty verdicts the Taipei District Court handed the former president, his family members, former government officials and other co-defendants.

Fears spread through world markets over Dubai debt

Investors recoiled from risky assets yesterday and dumped shares in Asian banks and builders, fearing a Dubai debt default could reignite the financial turmoil of the credit crisis.

Stocks from Tokyo to Mumbai were haunted by suspicion of lenders’ exposure to Dubai firms that built islands in the Gulf, planned cities from Pakistan to Africa and fashioned the financial hub of the world’s biggest oil exporting region.

Former American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) chairman Richard Bush said in Taipei yesterday that it is important to build a consensus in Taiwan about its core interests so that the country can face the challenges that lie ahead.

The former AIT head, who now serves as the director of the Center for Northeast Asia Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution, made the remark at an international conference titled “A Spectacular Century: The Republic of China (ROC) Centennial Democracy Forums.”

The two-day conference was organized by the Council for Cultural Affairs as part of a year-long celebration of the country’s 100th anniversary.
