TSU launches ECFA referendum

The Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) and 50 pro-independence groups yesterday launched a referendum drive against the government’s proposed economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) with China, vowing to stop President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) in his tracks.

TSU Chairman Huang Kun-huei (黃昆輝) told a press conference that the party would arrange 24 locations nationwide to collect signatures for the petition. He called on the public to stand up and express their opinions on this important issue.

Wang resigns over death penalty row

In a surprise development, Minister of Justice Wang Ching-feng (王清峰) tendered her resignation last night, after initially saying she would not step down over the row about enforcing the death penalty.

Wang offered her resignation verbally to Premier Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) around 10pm , Executive Yuan Spokesman Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) said, and Wu approved it after reporting the matter to President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九).

DHARAMSHALA, May 28: Various sources in exile as well the Chinese official news agencies are now confirming earlier reports of a twin self-immolation protest in Tibet’s capital Lhasa yesterday.

According to reports received by Phayul, a 19-year-old Tibetan identified as Dorjee Tseten, along with his friend, an unidentified 25-year old male set themselves on fire in front of the historic Jokhang Temple in an apparent protest against the Chinese government.
