Academic says US, China fighting for Taiwan’s heart

China has a secret plan to draw Taiwan into its campaign to replace the US as the global superpower, Hudson Institute Center for Chinese Strategy director Michael Pillsbury said on Tuesday.

“Part of their secret strategy is to pull Taiwan over to China’s side — they believe it is a big mistake to alienate Taiwan,” he said.

US promises to assist Taiwan ‘in any way’ possible

The US will help in any way it can with the investigation into the crash of TransAsia Flight GE235, a Washington official said on Wednesday.

US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian Affairs Daniel Russel told a media briefing that he did not know if Taipei had actually made a request for assistance.

Members of the US Congress are being asked to lodge a formal protest with the Chinese government over its efforts to have a large mural promoting Taiwan independence removed from a wall in the town of Corvallis, Oregon.

The Chinese consulate in San Francisco last week wrote to the mayor of Corvallis and sent two diplomats to see her in an attempt to censor the mural.
