Court watcher Jennifer Cheng says Chen Shui-bian was harrassed in the courtroom

Jennifer Cheng, a supporter of imprisoned former President Chen Shui-bian, attended every session of Chen’s 2009 trial. The trial was restricted to a limited attendance of twenty members of the public per day. Many sought admission but only a few got in the courtroom making Cheng’s attendance record remarkable.

Jennifer Cheng is an unabashed supporter of Chen Shui-bian and repeatedly referred to Chen by his nickname, Abian, during an interview in the coffee shop of a downtown Taipei hotel to discuss Chen’s trial.

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) yesterday called on President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) to grant former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) medical parole after a magazine reported on the deterioration of Chen’s health.

The DPP Central Standing Committee yesterday reached a resolution to demand that Ma grant medical parole for Chen, who is serving an 18-and-a-half-year sentence for corruption, but has been hospitalized for treatment of various complications.

NEW DELHI, January 30: The four-day Tibet solidarity campaign began on a high political note in the Indian capital today with top Indian leaders from both sides of the Indian Parliament expressing their support and solidarity with Tibet.

Former deputy prime minister and stalwart Indian leader LK Advani shared the stage with official representatives of the ruling Indian National Congress and members of parliament, Priya Dutt and Dr EM Sudarsan Natchiappan.

KMT not designed to be democratic

There has been considerable debate recently about President Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) eligibility to stand for a third term as Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) chairman.

Many of his supporters within the party say this is an “in-house affair.” Former KMT chairman Wu Poh-hsiung (吳伯雄), for example, has said that a party’s right to decide its own personnel matters should be acknowledged and that the matter was an internal one so people should respect the KMT’s autonomy. All the party needs is consensus within its own ranks, Wu said.
