US panel urges China sanctions plan

The US should create an interagency committee under the president to develop options and plans for sanctioning China in the event that Beijing takes hostile action against Taiwan, a US congressional advisory panel said on Tuesday.

The conclusion was one of 10 recommendations made by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission in an annual report to the US Congress.

Kyiv service to be held for fallen Taiwanese soldier

The Ukrainian military is planning to hold a farewell ceremony in Kyiv to honor Tseng Sheng-guang (曾聖光), a Hualien County-native who died fighting for Ukraine last week.

“He proved himself as a disciplined, balanced, brave warrior,” Vasylyna Nakonechna, a press officer at the military’s Carpathian Sich Battalion, said on Wednesday.

Tseng, 25, was a member of the International Legion of the Ukrainian Territorial Defense Forces. He died during a combat mission in the contested Luhansk region on Wednesday last week, making him the first Taiwanese volunteer combatant to die in the Ukraine war.

The US must warn China of the severe consequences of taking military action against Taiwan, former US national security adviser John Bolton said in Taipei yesterday.

Bolton made the remarks while giving the keynote address at the World Taiwanese Congress’ annual meeting.

He added that the US must work closer with Taiwan and allied countries in Asia on national security to counter Chinese aggression, and ensure that Taiwan remains a free and democratic country.
