Rebiya Kadeer to sue Taiwan over terrorism claims

Exiled Uighur activist Rebiya Kadeer plans to sue the government for linking her organization to terrorism, a Taiwanese group said yesterday.

Taiwanese officials last week banned Kadeer from visiting Taiwan, saying her World Uyghur Congress (WUC) has close links to the East Turkestan Islamic Movement — a charge she flatly rejected. The East Turkestan Islamic Movement is listed as a terrorist organization by the US.

US ‘will not waver’ on arms pledge

US General Wallace Gregson, assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific security affairs, said that President Barack Obama’s administration “will not waver in its commitment to provide those defense articles and services necessary for Taiwan’s self-defense.”

But he stopped well short of telling the US-Taiwan Defense Industry Conference in Charlottesville, Virginia, this week just what specific weapons systems would be offered.

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) yesterday said President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) should report to Taipei prosecutors and explain the charges his administration has brought against former Mainland Affairs Council deputy minister Chang Hsieh-yao (張顯耀).

Prosecutors should also subpoena Premier Jiang Yi-huah (江宜樺), National Security Council Secretary-General King Pu-tsung (金溥聰) and Mainland Affairs Council Minister Wang Yu-chi (王郁琦), the DPP said.
