St Lucian PM touts unification of Taiwan and China

At the most recent UN General Assembly, Saint Lucian Prime Minister Kenny Anthony, one of the nation’s diplomatic allies, said he was aware of the determination of Taiwanese and Chinese to unite their countries, and that his country looks forward to that, a document obtained by Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) from the UN Web site said.

Hsiao disclosed Anthony’s statement, made at the 67th session of UN General Assembly on Sept. 28, yesterday at the legislature’s Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee.

US politician urges Chen Shui-bian to be freed from jail

Ranking member of the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee US Representative Howard Berman has written to President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) to appeal for the medical parole of former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁).

“Releasing Chen from prison on humanitarian grounds would allow him to receive the thorough, long-term medical treatment that he needs and would aid in his physical and mental recovery,” the letter says.

Republican Senator John Cornyn on Tuesday accused US President Barack Obama of treating Taiwan in a “deplorable” way and said he was attaching an amendment — aimed at forcing the White House to sell Taipei advanced F-16C/D jets — to a vitally important trade bill.

The provision was to be introduced yesterday, when the Obama administration was expected to officially unveil its latest Taiwanese arms deal package to Congress.

Senior administration officials have already leaked word that the package will not include the 66 F-16C/Ds that Taiwan desperately wants to modernize its air force.
