Democracy camp wins big in HK vote

Hong Kong’s pro-democracy opposition won a stunning landslide victory in weekend local elections in a clear rebuke to Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam (林鄭月娥) over her handling of violent protests that have divided the territory.

A record number of Hong Kongers had cast ballots in district elections by yesterday afternoon, with hours to go before polls were due to close, as they seized the first opportunity to vote after months of increasingly violent protests calling for greater democracy.

About 2.5 million people, or about 60 percent of the electorate, had voted by 6:30pm, the Hong Kong government said.

The Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) yesterday filed a lawsuit against President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) and former Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) chairman Su Chi (蘇起), accusing the two of treason by conspiring with China to create the so-called “1992 consensus,” which the party said had never existed.

TSU Chairman Huang Kun-huei (黃昆輝) filed the lawsuit at the Taiwan High Prosecutors’ Office after a press conference where he said Ma and Su should be held accountable for inventing the consensus, which could eventually jeopardize Taiwan’s sovereignty.
