Switzerland motion to boost ties

Switzerland’s National Council, the lower house of its parliament, on Tuesday passed a motion to improve ties with Taiwan.

Previously approved by the Foreign Affairs Committee in June, the motion was passed by the council with 129 votes in favor, 43 against and five abstentions.

Ministry mum on TECRO name change

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday declined comment on a Financial Times report that the name of Taiwan’s representative office in Washington might be changed, saying only that bolstering and upgrading ties with the US has been the government’s long-term objective.

Former vice secretary of the National Security Council (NSC) Parris Chang recently wrote in the Formosa Post that NSC Secretary-General Su Chi visited China in 2005 when he was serving as a Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) legislator and that he was looked after by the Chinese government.

During his stay, he gave a speech at a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) school in which he spoke out against the US government’s sale of military items to Taiwan, a move that caused the US to suspect Su’s allegiance, Chang said.
