Taiwan’s Chang defeats top seed

World No. 1 and defending champion Dinara Safina was knocked out in the second round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open yesterday by Taiwanese qualifier Chang Kai-chen (張凱貞) only hours before her fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova was ousted in another upset result.

Safina was serving for the match in the third set when she double-faulted to give up a break. Chang, ranked 132nd and playing only for the fourth time in a WTA main draw, held her own serve and then broke Safina again for a 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 7-5 win to reach the third round of the US$2 million tournament.

US academics decry unfair treatment in Chen trial

Two leading US academics — both with strong ties to Taiwan — have condemned the treatment of former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and called for the case to be handled fairly.

Arthur Waldron, a professor of international relations at the University of Pennsylvania, said he was “shocked” by “the stench of vindictiveness” associated with Chen’s trial.

Four alleged unification supporters yesterday disrupted a forum organized by the Taiwan East Turkestan Association in Taipei, shouting: “US Marines get out of Taiwan” and “Fucking USA” as an official representing the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) was about to take the podium.

Dolkun Isa, president of the Germany-based World Uyghur Congress, also attended the “Reveal the Truth: Uighur Tribunal” forum at the National 228 Memorial Museum in Taipei.
