Residents of Penghu reject casino resort plan

More than 17,000 Penghu residents voted against a plan to allow casino resorts in a referendum yesterday, defeating supporters of the casino plan by about 4,000.

Cheering, clapping and shouting “Penghu is hopeful,” members of the Penghu Alliance Against Casinos celebrated as the Penghu County Election Commission released the official results of the referendum.

DPP’s Liu wins by landslide in Yunlin


 

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Liu Chien-kuo (劉建國) secured a landslide victory in yesterday’s Yunlin legislative by-election, giving the party a boost as corruption charges against former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) continue to dog the opposition party.

Liu garnered 74,272 votes, beating his Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) rival Chang Ken-hui (張艮輝) by nearly 45,000 votes. Voter turnout was 45.55 percent.

A congressman has asked US President Barack Obama to become directly involved in the growing controversy over the future of the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD).

Robert Andrews, a Democrat from New Jersey, said in a letter to the White House that the TFD’s existence and present general policy directions were very much in line with the “fundamental values of democracy and human rights which Taiwan shares with the US.”
