Concerned US urges closer ties with China’s military

The US yesterday called for more interaction with China’s military, as the two nations try to build trust over defense issues amid US concerns about Beijing’s rapid military buildup.

“More still needs to be done to ensure that our defense and military establishments both have greater ... interaction with one another,” US Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell told reporters.

‘New York Times’ runs feature on White Terror film

The New York Times ran a major feature about Prince of Tears (淚王子), a movie set in 1950s Taiwan that exposes the brutality of the White Terror, which may surprise readers in the US who know little about Taiwan’s bloody past.

The Hong Kong-datelined report, published on Tuesday, opens: “The story usually goes like this: China was taken over by Chairman Mao [Zedong (毛澤東)] and became a brutal Communist state. Taiwan broke free and became a vibrant democracy. The ugliness of the last half-century — persecution, martial law, mass execution — happened on the mainland.”

The US has agreed to brief Taiwan before and after US President Donald Trump’s meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) in Florida on Thursday and Friday, a national security official said yesterday.
