Premier Wu rejects invitation to debate ECFA at NTU forum

Premier Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) yesterday rejected an invitation from students to hold a debate on the government’s plan to sign an economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) with China, saying he was busy and “does not understand the details as well as” the economics minister.

A group of students from National Taiwan University, National Taiwan Normal University and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology called a press conference on Monday asking Wu to explain the content of the ECFA and its impact on students at an NTU forum on Dec. 26 and Dec. 27.

Japan happy to see resurgence of DPP: chairperson

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairperson Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) said Japanese political circles were pleased to see the party back on its feet, at the conclusion of her four-day visit to Japan.

Speaking with reporters at Taoyuan Airport, Tsai said Japanese politicians were paying great attention to Taiwanese politics and were happy to see the DPP bounce back.

With 2013 around the corner, the 908 Taiwan Republic Campaign has produced a calendar in an effort to strengthen pro-localization consciousness and make Taiwanese history more widely known.

The numbers 908 — signifying the date on which the San Francisco Peace Treaty was signed — are included in the pro-Taiwan independence organization’s name because founder and convener Peter Wang (王獻極) believes that Japan gave up its rights of governance over Taiwan but made no mention of who it ceded control to, making Taiwan a sovereign country that is, in Wang’s words, temporarily and unlawfully occupied by the “Republic of China government-in-exile.”
