US rejects Beijing’s demand to cancel Dalai Lama meeting

The US has escalated a mounting row on multiple fronts with China, refusing Beijing’s demand to cancel US President Barack Obama’s meeting this week with the Dalai Lama.

The deepening public spat over Tibet, a row over US arms sales to Taiwan, China’s dispute with Google and trade and currency disagreements, come at a key diplomatic moment, as Obama seeks Chinese help to toughen sanctions on Iran.

Freddie Lim invites Kadeer to visit for movie's DVD launch

A pro-independence group said yesterday it had invited Uighur leader Rebiya Kadeer to visit Taiwan after a previous trip was banned by the government because of concerns that it would provoke Beijing.

Freddy Lim (林昶佐), head of Guts United Taiwan, extended the invitation when he met Kadeer in Washington on Wednesday, the group said in a statement.

Chinese central bank Governor Zhou Xiaochuan (周小川) said that local-government financing vehicles using land as collateral may pose risks for the nation’s banks.

“When land prices rise, there may be over-valuation of land,” Zhou said at a press briefing in Beijing yesterday. “In the future, if land prices fall, there may be a difference in the assessment of the loan.”
