US congressmen mark 228 anniversary

Two US congressmen have issued statements to commemorate the 63rd anniversary of the 228 Incident.

Representatives Scott Garrett of New Jersey and Kenny Merchant of Texas, both Republicans, published a history of the incident and its impact on modern Taiwan in Congressional Record, the official record of the proceedings and debates of the US Congress.

Massacre victims, families sue KMT

A total of 108 people — including 33 victims of the 228 Massacre and 75 family members — yesterday filed a lawsuit against the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), demanding it apologize for the massacre and compensate them for their hardship.

“Nearly 63 years have passed, still the KMT has never shown any intention to take responsibility and apologize to victims and their families,” Yang Chen-lung (楊振隆), whose uncle was killed by KMT troops, told a press conference at the 228 Memorial Park in Taipei.

There are many reasons for the Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) losses in the local elections on Nov. 24 last year. To sum up, today’s government and civic society only see the trees — pensions, support for the LGBT community, the five-day workweek and so on — but the more crucial “China factor” is not a priority.

There are two aspects to the China factor: infiltration and discourse. Despite this, the government’s response to China, in particular when it comes to the economy, is lacking and out of touch with reality.
