China forcing Burmese refugees back into warzone, says HRW

DHARAMSHALA, June 28: Chinese authorities are forcing back into Burma, ethnic Kachin refugees who have fled civil war, and is denying basic care to many who remain, a human rights group said this week.

In a 68-page report, US based Human Rights Watch said thousands of Burmese refugees in China are at the risk of being forcibly returned to the war-torn northern region of Burma from China’s border province of Yunan.

DPP seeks public support for ex-president

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) yesterday passed a resolution urging party representatives and officials to gather public support for the release of former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) for medical treatment.

“The DPP urged its councilors and representatives at various levels nationwide to solicit support [for Chen’s medical release] and called for more support from civic groups with the resolution,” DPP spokesperson Lin Chun-hsien (林俊憲) said after the Central Executive Committee meeting.

Groups yesterday protested the Ministry of Education’s bid to “slightly adjust” the national high-school curriculum, calling the move part of a “brainwashing” policy that would see the new curriculum reflect a more China-oriented perspective.

Despite the groups’ opposition, the ministry later formally approved a new curriculum on Chinese literature and social sciences.
