Ma Ying-jeou's Mentor Remains Depressed Over What He Sees in Taiwan

One has to wonder, how many times must Ma Ying-jeou's mentor and former law professor have to criticize Ma's government before they get the picture. Twice he has spoken out on the corruption and the violations on human rights as well as the injustices prevalent in Taiwan. Yet in the short span of six months Jerome Cohen has felt compelled to speak out once more. This time he criticizes the silence of the legal personnel in standing up to the government's abuses. US President Barack Obama used a landmark encounter with the prime minister of military-run Myanmar yesterday to demand freedom for detained democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi.

“I reaffirmed the policy that I put forward yesterday in Tokyo with regard to Burma,” Obama told reporters, using the former name of the country that has kept Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest for most of the past two decades.
