Most in US choose protecting Taiwan over China ties

More than half of US respondents in a poll considered protecting Taiwan more important than maintaining good relations with China, a survey conducted by The Economist and YouGov showed.

The poll conducted from Feb. 25 to Tuesday last week asked 1,500 adult US citizens questions about the US’ role amid rising tensions between Taiwan and China.

Fifty-one percent of the respondents said it is more important for the US “to take a strong stand so that China does not take over Taiwan by force,” while 24 percent preferred “the US to maintain good relations with China.”

Lin murders probe must continue

Control Yuan members Tsai Chung-yi (蔡崇義) and Fan Sun-lu (范巽綠) on Feb. 24 released a report on the 1980 murders of family members of political activist Lin I-hsiung (林義雄).

Intelligence agencies of the then-Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) government, spearheaded by the now-defunct Taiwan Garrison Command, interfered with the investigation of the case, the report said.

Even though the report does not have a definite conclusion, the two Control Yuan members examined the case thoroughly and believe that the investigation should continue. The Executive Yuan should make sure it does.

Cognitive warfare is no joke

Quoting a US radio host’s Twitter post, a former Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) legislator has been peddling the idea that the “US plans to destroy Taiwan.” While the tweet was a satirical post made up by the host, it is precisely this kind of misinterpretation and dissemination of disinformation that could lead to the “destruction” of Taiwan.

The “US plans to destroy Taiwan” tweet was posted on Feb. 16 by Garland Nixon, a radio talk show host based in Washington and identified to be a journalist working for Russian state-run media Radio Sputnik. The post says: “Breaking News: White House insiders leak that, when asked if there could be any greater disaster than the neocon Ukraine project, President Biden responded, ‘wait until you see our plan for the destruction of Taiwan.’”

Tsai commemorates 228 heroes, victims

Living with dignity is the best way to commemorate the 228 Incident, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) said yesterday in a speech at the 228 Incident Memorial Ceremony in Tainan.

The government’s 76th anniversary memorial ceremony in commemoration of the 1947 incident was held in Tainan 228 Memorial Park.

It was one of many events, including ceremonies, movie screenings, parades and silent commemorations, held throughout the country to mark the occasion.

A Republic of China (ROC) Military Academy project to install solar panels on its campus has reportedly been subcontracted to a company that is affiliated with China’s Huawei Technologies Co (華為), which was also found to have installed solar panels atop a building at the Legislative Yuan in Taipei, sparking concern over national security.
