Lee Ching-yu (李淨瑜), the wife of detained human rights advocate Lee Ming-che (李明哲), said remarks by China’s Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) substantiated an accusation that Beijing has its compradors in the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), after the office yesterday confirmed that it had commissioned a third party to “relate the relevant situation” to Lee Ching-yu and pass letters from Lee Ming-che to her and his parents, while warning other groups not to intervene in the case.

Lee Ching-yu (李淨瑜), wife of detained human rights advocate Lee Ming-che (李明哲), was yesterday prevented from boarding a plane to Beijing to search for her husband after her “Taiwan compatriot travel document” was canceled by the Chinese government.

US Navy dispatches strike group to Korean Peninsula

The US Navy on Saturday said it had sent a carrier-led strike group to the Korean Peninsula in a show of force against North Korea’s “reckless” nuclear weapons program.

Buying the right weapons

Just as Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) was visiting the US for talks with US President Donald Trump, unconfirmed reports were coming in that the US is considering a new round of military sales to Taiwan.

According to the reports, Taiwan might be offered the weapons deal this summer, and the package may include advanced air defense systems as well as Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II multirole jets.

Presidential Office Spokesman Lo Chih-chiang (羅智強) yesterday said he would pen a protest letter to Freedom House over its latest report alleging he meddled with news content while at the state-owned Central News Agency (CNA).

The Washington-based political and human rights watchdog this week released a full version of Freedom in the World 2010 that included individual country reports.
