Dead fish thrown at Executive Yuan

Yunlin County Commissioner Su Chih-feng (蘇治芬) and a group of Mailiao Township (麥寮) residents yesterday appealed to Premier Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) and the government to listen to their complaints about pollution from a naphtha cracker in their town.

Braving the scorching sun, the protesters knelt in front of the Executive Yuan during their protest. They also threw dead fish and clams that had been found days after a fire broke out in a residual desulphurizer at Formosa Petrochemical Corp’s petrochemical complex on Sunday night.

Push in US for Taiwan to enter ICAO

US Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen on Tuesday called on US President Barack Obama’s administration to immediately push for Taiwan to be awarded observer status in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Blaming China for working behind the scenes to keep Taiwan out of ICAO, she said: “The provincial and shortsighted manipulations of Beijing’s leaders who seek to deny Taiwan international space cannot stand in the way of airport safety and security.”

The Taiwan High Court yesterday rescinded previous rulings and found former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and former first lady Wu Shu-jen (吳淑珍) not guilty of corruption, in a retrial of their state affairs fund case.

However, it upheld Chen’s previous conviction for his role in the use of fraudulent receipts to obtain reimbursement for spending from the state affairs fund. On that charge, Chen was given an additional 20-month prison sentence that was cut to 10 months in accordance with a commutation statute.

The court also upheld Chen’s conviction for his role in a money laundering case that concerned a land deal in Taoyuan County’s Longtan (龍潭) and sentenced him to another two years in prison.
