Culture genocide in Tibet is true, says former US diplomat

DHARAMSHALA, November 15: John Graham, a former US diplomat, after a ten-day private visit to Tibet, last month, has attested that reports of cultural genocide in Tibet are true.

"For ten days last month I saw first-hand what the Chinese are doing in Tibet … The reports you've heard of cultural genocide are true. China is obliterating the ideas, traditions and habits of the Tibetan people," writes Graham in an article titled ‘Goodbye Tibet?’

A new poll suggests the gap between the presidential candidates fielded by the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has shrunk to a mere 0.61 percentage points, well within the margin of error.

According to the poll conducted by the Chinese-language Liberty Times (the Taipei Times’ sister paper) from Monday to Wednesday, if President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) of the KMT, DPP Chairperson Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and People First Party (PFP) Chairman James Soong (宋楚瑜) all participate in January’s presidential election, Ma would get 33.58 percent of the vote, Tsai 32.97 percent and Soong 11.17 percent.

Former US attorney-general Ramsey Clark, a long-time advocate for Taiwan’s democratization, is scheduled to arrive today on a two-day visit and is due to visit former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) to get a better grasp on the conditions of his confinement and reportedly deteriorating health.

The former US official made the trip at the invitation of former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator Chai Trong-rong (蔡同榮) amid growing concerns both in Taiwan and abroad over the state Chen’s health as well as his human rights.
