Tsai pledges solidarity, justice if she wins poll

In her New Year speech yesterday, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) said her wish was to win the Jan. 14 presidential election and promised to turn Taiwan into a country where solidarity and justice prevail.

“My fellow countrymen, I wish you a happy new year on the first day of 2012. I would also like to take this opportunity to offer my sincere pledge to make Taiwan a country of solidarity and justice,” she said at a flag-raising ceremony in Greater Tainan.

The DPP yesterday showed a teleconference between Harvard professor Chen Lan-bo and its spokesperson Chen Chi-mai, right, in which Chen endorsed Tsai Ing-wen’s innocence and said Taiwanese should be angered by the KMT smear campaign.

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) yesterday disclosed more information as it reiterated that presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) was innocent of alleged illegal involvement in Yu Chang Biologics Co (宇昌生技股份有限公司).

The party also again condemned Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) Minister Christina Liu (劉憶如) for what it said was repeated lying about document forgery.

The Taiwan High Court yesterday heard arguments from prosecutors, former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and his defense lawyers on whether to extend Chen’s detention after the current period expires on Dec. 24.

The judges announced that a decision would be delivered to the former president before his current period expires.
