US lawmakers call for Chen’s release

Two US lawmakers have submitted a medical report calling for immediate medical parole for former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) to the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission.

“Because it is not easily predictable how much Chen’s incarceration conditions need to improve to prevent further serious physical and mental damage, medical parole is the most appropriate effective treatment intervention,” the report said.

DHARAMSHALA, July 13: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has reportedly urged Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi to engage in dialogue with exile Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.

Clinton and Yang met Thursday in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for an annual forum of regional foreign ministers on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit.

The Dalai Lama on Wednesday said he is willing to visit Taiwan again whenever possible, adding that he hopes Taiwan could change China “through the power of democracy and freedom.”

The Tibetan spiritual leader made the remarks at his residence in Dharamsala, India, while meeting members of the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce in Delhi.

He told the visitors that Buddhism is not just a religion, but also a philosophy and a science.
