Breaking: Another self-immolation rocks Tibet, Toll reaches 102

DHARAMSHALA, February 17: In reports just in, another Tibetan set himself on fire today in the Labrang region of eastern Tibet protesting China’s continued occupation of Tibet.

Namlha Tsering, 49, carried out his fiery protest at around 5:40 pm (local time) in Sangchu region of Labrang. His current condition is not known although sources say chances of his survival are minimal.

Photos received by Phayul show Namlha Tsering sitting cross-legged in the middle of a street even as high flames are rising from his body. In another photo he is seen fallen on his back with fire still leaping from his body.

Medical teams clash after release of A-bian footage

A spokesperson for former president Chen Shui-bian’s (陳水扁) voluntary civilian medical team, Janice Chen (陳昭姿), said yesterday that she was prohibited from visiting the former president after an incident involving Next Magazine on Jan. 30, unless she signed a recognizance vowing to not disclose any information beyond what strictly pertains to his medical treatment.

The online version of Next Magazine, published on Jan. 30, featured 28 seconds of footage, provided by an anonymous reader, showing Chen Shui-bian’s right hand trembling, that his expression seemed vacant and that he had trouble talking.

Protesters led by Democratic Progressive Party Chiayi County branch director Huang Li-chen clash with police while protesting the government’s decision to relocate former president Chen Shui-bian and its failure to grant him medical parole as President Ma Ying-jeou presides over a Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) meeting in Chiayi yesterday afternoon.

During a visit by President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) yesterday to Chiayi County, a group of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) politicians and their supporters protested the transfer of former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) to Taichung Prison’s Pei-te Hospital, accusing the Ma administration of treating the former president inhumanely.

Ma, who doubles as Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) chairman, presided over a KMT meeting in Chiayi yesterday afternoon. Outside the KMT’s Chiayi County branch, about 100 protesters led by DPP Chiayi County branch director Huang Li-chen (黃麗貞) clashed with police while protesting against the government’s failure to grant Chen medical parole.
