Center urges US action on Taiwan’s integration

Taiwan’s quest for greater participation in the international community is of great importance to all democracies, senior vice president for Asia at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Mike Green, said on Wednesday.

“The people of Taiwan deserve — and we need to see them get — a seat at the table,” he said.

Green was presiding over a packed meeting held in a room within the US Congress to formally release a new report by CSIS senior adviser for Asia Bonnie Glaser on the nation’s need to be part of international organizations.

Japan urges global action against Chinese air zone

Japanese Minister of Defense Itsunori Onodera yesterday called on the international community to oppose China’s recently declared maritime air defense zone over the East China Sea and possibly over the disputed South China Sea.

Onodera discussed Tokyo’s concern over Beijing’s action separately with Philippine Secretary of Defense Voltaire Gazmin and Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs Julia Bishop.

Family members of former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) rushed to the prison hospital in Greater Taichung yesterday upon receiving news that he had broken a bone in a fall on Saturday.

The former first lady, Wu Shu-jen (吳淑珍), had already been informed and paid a visit to her husband over the weekend.

According to Chen Chih-chung (陳致中), son of the former president, his father fell and fractured the fibula, or calf bone, in his right leg.
