Japanese geologist Yoshinobu Tsuji and nuclear industry consultant Satoshi Sato yesterday at a forum in Taipei spoke about potential safety problems at Taiwan’s nuclear power plants, potential pitfalls related to the emergency response mechanism and why extending the service life of nuclear power plants is unsafe.

Rash of ‘defacements’ hits Chiang Kai-shek statues

An usually high number of protests targeting statues of former president Chiang Kai-shek (蔣介石) have been reported across the nation in the wake of the 68th anniversary of the 228 Incident on Saturday.

A statue of Chiang erected in Taichung City’s Jhongjheng Park (中正公園) was found yesterday morning covered with white and red paint as well as ghost money, with the Chinese characters for “killer” and “villain” spray-painted on its pedestal.

The proposal by the Ministry of Education that high-school curriculum guidelines should say that the right to self-determination of people under colonial rule is restricted is aimed at depriving Taiwanese of their right to determine the future of their own country, while downplaying the White Terror era is an attempt to legitimize authoritarian rule, academics said yesterday.

Amid strong criticism, the ministry announced the full versions of adjustments to be made to the history, civic and social studies, Chinese language and geography curricula on Monday night.
