Ex-DPP chief out of touch with Taiwan, activists say

Several pro-localization groups yesterday urged former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) chairman Hsu Hsin-liang (許信良) and DPP member and former Straits Exchange Foundation chairman Hung Chi-chang (洪奇昌) to stop meddling in the DPP and the younger generation’s pursuit of Taiwanese independence.

Independence remarks spark DPP ire

Former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) chairman Hsu Hsin-liang (許信良) sparked controversy yesterday, claiming that the party would not reject “unification” of Taiwan and China as an option and that Taiwanese independence is not one of its mainstream values.

Speaking in an interview with Chinese media outlet the Global Times, Hsu said that “independence” was never an objective when the DPP was founded in 1986 and that Taiwanese independence is not a mainstream value in the party, adding that the DPP would not reject Taiwan’s “unification” with China as a possibility.

Opposition lawmakers and academics accused the government of revisionism and seeking to “brainwash” students after the Ministry of Education yesterday unveiled revisions to the high school curriculum that prioritize China’s history over that of Taiwan.

The Ministry of Education will hold the first of several public hearings on the proposed history course revision in Taipei City on Thursday, overriding concerns that the new changes will subject students to yet another course overhaul, the second in the past five years.
