The New Power Party (NPP) yesterday announced its new leadership lineup — a seven-member board of chairpersons that it said could prevent abuse of power and encourage participatory democracy — and vowed to win 10 percent of the at-large vote in January’s legislative elections.

Chinese order angers Kaohsiung police

Kaohsiung police were incensed by a recent “official document” sent by police in China’s Guandong Province ordering Taiwanese police to follow up on a criminal case.

Officers at Kaohsiung’s Yancheng District (鹽埕) Police Station were perplexed after receiving the document by mail earlier this week, which originated from the Chinese Ministry of Public Security’s Boluo County Shuishang District Police Precinct.

TAIPEI, Aug 19 (Reuters) - A Taiwan town where 700 people were displaced after the island's worst typhoon in 50 years has declined mobile homes from political rival China, fearing the they might contain toxic chemicals, officials said on Wednesday.

Chiatung Township refused 100 quick-assembly homes after Taiwan's notoriously anti-China county of Pingtung said that based on news reports in China, they might contain formalin, a chemical that can be hazardous in high doses, deputy county magistrate Chung Chia-pin said.
