Society to commemorate POWs

The Taiwan POW Camps Memorial Society and the Australian Commerce and Industry Office in Taipei have organized a Remembrance Weekend on Saturday and Sunday to commemorate the more than 4,350 Allied prisoners of war (POWs) held in camps in Taiwan between August 1942 and September 1945.

The 14th annual event includes a banquet on Saturday night at the Grand Hotel and a Remembrance Day Service on Sunday morning at the Kinkaseki-Taiwan Prisoner of War Memorial on the site of the former Kinkaseki POW Camp in Jinguashi (金瓜石), near Jiufen (九份), Taipei County.

Chen found not guilty in bribery trial

Citing insufficient proof, the Taiwan District Court yesterday acquitted former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and his wife, Wu Shu-jen (吳淑珍), of charges that they laundered money and took bribes from bankers in exchange for help manipulating bank mergers.

Nineteen co-defendants were also cleared of charges of money laundering, breach of trust and insider trading because of a lack of proof, Judge Chou Chan-chun (周占春) said yesterday afternoon.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidates for legislative by-elections in Greater Tainan and Greater Kaohsiung both defeated their Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) counterparts yesterday, increasing the party’s number of seats in the Legislative Yuan to 33, compared to the KMT’s 73 seats.

According to a statement from the Kaohsiung City Election Commission, vote counting for the legislative by-election was completed at 5:25pm, with a voter turnout of 33.97 percent.”
